DISTRICTS SOSPIRATI- "Whispering"

Rioni Sospirati takes its name from the Sospiro, a Roman term for a glass of wine, exactly 1/10 of a liter. The etymology of “the sigh” (the whisper) was born out of the shame of not having enough money to offer a drink; it was said in a low voice, almost whispered. The districts will be our metaphysical space where our journey will take shape. The idea is to stroll the streets, enjoying stories, curiosities and a bit of history, with two or three stops where the sospiro ("sigh") and the spuntino ("snack") will hypen our knowledge and consciousness, allowing us to say at the end of the tour “ In Vino Veritas”.

Districts Sospirati - Sant'Angelo and Regola

LOCATION: Rioni Regola e Sant'Angelo

The Rione Sant'Angelo, commonly known as the Jewish Ghetto, will be our point of departure. Rather than discuss the negative history that permeates this place, our focus will be on Jewish culture, its traditions and customs, and how much Jewish food has influenced Roman cuisine.
We will cross ‘the border’ to discover the legend behind the beautiful Fountain of the Turtles before arriving in the Rione Regola, the undisputed home of two Roman legends, the Antico Forno Roscioli and the Filettaro of S. Barbara. Our final stop: the Antica Norcineria Viola of 1890 in Campo di Fiori, a square that has transformed numerous times over the centuries and is rich in folklor.

Districts Sospirati - Trastevere

LOCATION: Rione Trastevere

The Trastevere district: the working-class theater of Roman culture, inhabited as far back as the time of Augustus. In modern times it is the district of Trilussa, Claudio Villa, Alberto Sordi, Sergio Leone and Carlo Verdone. With its basilicas dedicated to Saints and Madonnas, the neighborhood still preserves its medieval charm of an old, irregular village, with narrow streets and alleys, small balconies, facades of houses with laundry hanging on clothespins, and disheveled cobblestones. Its many bars, wine bars and nightclubs continue to make it a trendy district of Rome. Among the gastronomic delights of Trastevere, we recommend: Sorelle Ferrara, Suppliroma, Antica Caciara Trasteverina, Che siete venuti a fà-Pub.

Districts Sospirato - Monti and the Suburra

LOCATION: Rione Monti

Rione Monti, the first district of Rome, takes its name from three hills: the Esquiline, the Viminal and the Quirinal. In ancient times, the dangerous Suburra of Rome was found here, a very crowded, dirty and noisy neighborhood full of infamous inns and “lupanari” (brothels), where fires and collapsed buildings were commonplace. Repopulated in the Baroque era thanks to the urban planning of Pope Sixtus V. Today Monti is the most contemporary district of Rome, filled with artisan workshops and artists’ studios, night clubs and wine bars, great restaurants and unique street food. Among the gastronomic delights of Monti we recommend: I Tre Scalini, Zia Rosetta, Fuorinorma and the gelateria Fatamorgana.

Districts Sospirato - Testaccio, between potsherds, marine docks and contemporaryart

LOCATION: Rione Testaccio

The Testaccio district has always been characterized by the Monte dei Cocci, an ancient Roman hill of discarded potsherds, and its historic slaughterhouse, operational until 1975. Our micro-journey overwhelms the senses, taking us through the origins of the old stadium of the Roma team,
or the non-Catholic cemetery, or the new Museum of Contemporary Art built inside the old slaughterhouse. We must then indulge our taste buds; the district today boasts many culinary delights, from Volpetti to Felice, from Perilli to Giolitti, not to mention Trapizzino. Perhaps this will be enough to makeus fall in love with the last real district of Rome.
